2015 Jumpstart

It’s January 2nd and that time of the year to state your resolutions. I know I am not the only one who wants to shed some extra pounds that magically appeared over the holidays. How on earth did I gain them? Commercials about gym memberships, plastic surgery, and the latest home workout equipment annoyingly flood the t.v. Every year this happens and every year the efforts to tone up and become my best self only seem to last a short while. Not this time though. A few weeks prior to the new year,  I spent some time thinking about what my resolutions would be in 2015. I wrote down each resolution (there were many). One of which was getting and more importantly staying in shape.

I come from a family where gaining weight is simply not an option. In fact, it’s an excuse for being lazy. Growing up, I rarely ever ate junk food inside or outside of the house. Dinners my mother made consisted of some type of gourmet salad and grilled chicken. My mom would try to mix it up by adding different toppings to the salads and grill the chicken with different seasonings but at the end of the day it was still salad and chicken. With good eating habits established at such a young age, I continue with those habits today at 30 years old. Although I enjoy pizza, burgers, Mexican food, beer, and wine, I only consume those items on the weekends.

After waking up with a gnarly headache the day after NYE I realized that I am going to challenge myself for 30 straight days (if not more) to omit certain foods and alcoholic beverages from my diet. I am not a junk food eater nor am I an excessive drinker but I do realize areas in which I could improve my day-to-day diet.

So here it goes, today is the day where I commit to cutting out all red meat, chicken, dairy, and pointless carbs. I also will not consume even one drop of alcohol. Does that include wine? Yep, even wine. Weekly gym sessions are in order. I will attend the gym (at least) 4 times a week and will also be active at least one day out of the weekend by going on a hike, bike ride, or jog. I will keep a diary of my progress, weight loss, foods in which I eat, and overall feelings along the way. I believe by keeping a journal, I can stay committed more than 30 days.

Jump-starting 2015 with a bang!
