It’s November and we are returning to our heaven on earth, Playa del Carmen. Only this time to celebrate a very special occasion–our honeymoon. After all the stress and excitement of the wedding, we were deeply looking forward to a little R&R. Returning to Playa made me reminisce about our very first trip to PDC back in 2005. We were 24 at the time and on a tight budget. We heard of Playa through one of David’s co-workers and were told that the all-inclusive resorts were among some of the best out there. After conducting our own research we thought, what the heck let’s book a trip. With the click of a button it was confirmed, in a few short months we would be on our first plane ride (together) in route to white sandy beaches, crystal clear water, sunny skies, palm trees, and 5 star service.
Those few short months flew by and as we touched down on the runway we were both filled with excitement. Not knowing exactly what to expect from Mexico, we were still overwhelmed with joy thinking about the fun times ahead. Off the plane and through the customs check we were finally greeted by our Best Days shuttle driver. We were both very pleased at the level of service that began even with this young man. He quickly grabbed our bags, loaded them into the 10 passenger van and off we went. The drive to the hotel was not scenic. Or maybe it was but not the scenic road I had pictured on the way to paradise. 30 minutes into the drive I was wondering where the white sand beaches were. Just as I began to question that, we drove passed a massive resort. Wow, is that our hotel? Nope. Now with my eyes wide open and my heart beating through my chest, I felt like a child. I actually wanted to ask the driver that annoying question, are we there yet, each time we passed yet another resort. Then the moment came. We had arrived at the Riu Palace Mexico. The long “u” shaped driveway seemed enormous. Never-ending almost.
Fast forward 9 years (now on our honeymoon) and we still had that exact giddy feeling as we entered through the front doors of the same hotel we first stayed at on our very first trip to PDC. This was now our 4th time to Playa (each time staying at a different resort). But something was special about the Riu Palace Mexico. Not sure what exactly. All I know is the resort brought back so many wonderful memories of our first vacation together as a young couple. Just like we had remembered, we were greeted with yet another friendly smile and a fruity but alcoholic beverage as we checked in to the hotel. After 6-7 hours of travel, trust me, this mango beverage is exactly what you need to kick vacation mode into full gear.
Walking through the halls, we approached room 51. Doves could have flown out the door as we opened it and I wouldn’t have been surprised. Really, the room was just that glorious. We were welcomed with a king sized bed, a tub large enough for two, and gorgeous views of the massive fountain from our private patio. Okay, here is the best part, all rooms at the Riu Palce Mexico include a minibar. Not just your typical minibar though. We are talking ice cold water, club soda, tonic water, sodas (diet too), beer, AND four 750 ml bottles of liquor (Whiskey, Vodka, Rum, Tequila) all replenished daily! Clearly my favorite part. Score!
The first thing we did was quickly change into beach attire, slatther on some sunscreen and hit the beach. Oh but let me take a selfie first. Yep, I drive David crazy at times with photo ops!
Headed outdoors, passed the 3 large pools, outdoor bar, gourmet buffet, and onto that white soft sand. My jaw drops every time I see the crystal blue water. The same as it did the first time we saw it many years ago. Rivera Maya water is so welcoming due to the luke warm temperature. You can walk out 1/4 of a mile and you will still only be waste deep enjoying a drink in hand and casual conversations with other travelers from all around the world. We did just that. Grabbed a drink and headed for the ocean. We hung out and talked about everything under the sun. Literally. At times we could see fish zip past us and we would both point them out and ask with excitement. Did you see that one?
After drinks and probably too much sun, we sure worked up an appetite. No need for towels as we walked to the buffet, the weather was just perfect that our swim suits were almost dry as we approaced the dining area. The buffet options were amazing! Options ranging from sushi, to Chinese, Mexican, Italian, and American cuisine. Don’t forget about the dessert. Oh my goodness, every bite sized treat you could imagine not to mention the ice cream sundae bar. A food lovers paradise.
Aside from the spectacular beaches and finger licking good food, the service blew our socks off yet again. You never had to ask for anything. The staff was always one step ahead. Our beverages were refilled before we could even get half way through, dirty dishes were cleared from the table almost immediately, chairs were pulled out for the ladies, and the list goes on. We would tip the staff (not required but well deserved).
If one had any desire at all to leave the resort, take a quick short stroll down the road and find yourself at a vibrant plaza. You can easily spend all afternoon here! Bars, upscale restaurants, tons of shopping, entertainment, and much more. David and I don’t typically dine at the fancy shmancy spots much. Instead, we ask the locals where they like to eat, hop in a taxi, and try the food the locals call “authentic.” Our two favorite taco joints are El Fogon (known for their el pastor tacos) and Don Sirloin, obviously known for their succulent sirloin meat. I have to warn you though, these tacos are addicting. Be ready to eat 6 (or more) tacos. Wash them down with an ice cold beer, preferably a Sol. Oh my goodness, these are by far THE BEST tacos we have ever eaten and will find ourselves at one (or both) of these spots every other day during our stay in PDC.
After talking to other travelers we met, we found that many people are hesitant to leave the resort due to the dangers that are talked about regarding to the crime in Mexico. Valid concerns. However, PDC (at the moment) is very safe. We asked resort staff, “Why PDC was so safe when Acapulco and Cancun no longer are?” We were told by two separate people it was because there was only one drug lord running that area so there was no rival confrontations going on. Yep, you heard me the reason is due to only one drug lord. You would think that explanation alone would scare a ton of foreigners. It probably does. Well this particular drug lord is working with the police and promised to provide them with everything they need whenever they need it and that all he wants in exchange was to make sure that the tourists are safe. As crazy as that may sound, things seem to be working out in his favor because PDC is BOOMING with business right now and has been increasing almost 200% every year. Most tourists do in fact feel safe enough to leave the hotel and walk into town with their children even late at night. I too would feel comfortable traveling with my children to PDC–if I had any. For those not as comfortable with the idea of leaving the resort, no worries. Riu Palace Mexico offers plenty of entertainment, bars, and food at your disposal. The resort does such a good job with providing anything and everything you could possibly need. You feel like royalty.
Aside from the plaza, there are many excursions. We love and encourage everyone we know to check out Xcaret, Xplor, and Coba. All of which are for the adventurous, outdoorsy type. We are talking zip lining, ATV riding, swimming with dolphins, snorkeling, climbing pyramids, swimming in the most beautiful Cenotes, rafting in underground caves, eating lunch with local Mayans and so much more!
As you can see, I love PDC. So much to do for so little money. Truly a destination that can’t be beat. Great for families and couples alike. Although, if you do bring the kiddos, Riu Palace Mexico probably wouldn’t be the best resort since it’s geared more towards adults. I would recommend the Sandos resort for the little ones. They have numerous kid pools and activities (even child care on site). David and hope to make PDC a family tradition once we decide to start a family of our own. Making Playa a Summer getaway for our children to enjoy and remember. Oh the things we have to look forward to. Until next time…
